Apart from those, I don't think that there is any other essentials that you absolutely need. But I am one of those that prefer to keep PC as lean as possible. And I have never had any problem with Windows, drivers or anything else (except Steam, fuck it, won't install it ever again). Paint.net is pretty neat, even a fucking talentless loser like me can use it pretty well.

VLC player and Musicbee are good for media. I also have LINE, Telegram, and Whatsapp apps so I can chat from PC.
Telegram for my wife and me, Whatsapp because some losers still use it (like most of my family etc.), and LINE for Japanese contacts. Whatsapp sucks on PC, you need to have it open on your phone to be able to use it. Telegram is very good, LINE is ok. But yeah, you don't need antivirus, Win Def is enough unless you are a fucking idiot and click random stuff online.
I have NoScript and adblocks and everything in my browser so shouldn't be in danger from there. Everything I've read says that you need the Steam Overlay running to use the Steam Controller API. That said, you can add the specific exes of games/emulators to Steam ('Add a Game Add a non-Steam Game'), and then run the exe through Steam - the end-result is you're running a non-Steam app but will have the functionality of the Steam Controller API.
